Rohan Shah, the founding partner of Indian law firm Economic Laws Practice (ELP), will retire from the firm in September, with co-founder Suhail Nathani succeeding him as managing partner.

Following his retirement, Shah is set to become an independent counsel in Mumbai and New Delhi.

Nathani, who heads the international trade and customs practice of the firm, specialises in free trade agreements and anti-dumping issues.

Founded in 2001 by Shah, Nathani, Sujjain Talwar and Vikram Nankani, ELP is headquartered in Mumbai, and also has offices in Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Ahmedabad and Pune.

Shah joins a list of high-profile law firm partners who have recently left their firms to become independent counsel. In March, J. Sagar Associates partner Somasekhar Sundaresan left to start his practice, while in February, Anand Prasad, the co-founder of Trilegal, departed the firm to join politics and become an independent counsel.
