Japan’s TMI Associates has declared its intention of competing toe-to-toe with the country’s Big Four law firms in the corporate/M&A spaceafter hiring key partner Masakazu Iwakura from Nishimura & Asahi in Tokyo.

Iwakura, who joined his previous firm in 1987, became a partner in 1996. A corporate M&A lawyer, he has a track record of advising Japanese companies on multi-billion dollar deals.

Joining Iwakura at TMI is former Nishimura counsel Gyo Toda, who becomes a partner at his new firm. A securities lawyer, Toda joined Nishimura in 1997. 

TMI has 389 lawyers in 11 offices, including eight overseas offices.
