Toshinari Asano

Toshinari Asano is a Managing Director with Nardello & Co. in Tokyo, where he leads the firm’s Japan Practice. Toshi has been an investigator since 2003 and has significant experience conducting a wide variety of due diligence, complex investigative assignments involving fraud and corruption, asset searches and other litigation-support investigations for clients in Japan and overseas.
 
With a background in banking, Toshinari is particularly fluent in understanding the needs of investment banks, hedge funds, private equity firms and real estate investment firms as it relates to mitigating potential and existing investment risk, KYC programs, counter-party risk assessment and due diligence in relation to M&A transactions. In one such matter, he helped a client extricate itself from a problematic real estate investment in Japan after its partners were found to have organized crime links. Toshinari has also led a large cross-border asset search for a Japanese client embroiled in litigation proceedings overseas, and managed an internal investigation into allegations of corruption and employee embezzlement at a US company’s operations in Japan.
 
Prior to joining Nardello & Co., Toshinari was a senior investigator in Japan with two international investigations firms. He began his career in the financial services industry, working for a Japanese long-term credit bank and a major US investment bank. He has also held a senior management position at a Japanese-Israeli technology venture company. Toshinari holds a BA in Legal Studies from the Sophia University in Tokyo and is fluent in Japanese and English.

Ms. Miyake has advised clients on various eDiscovery matters including: Complex U.S. federal and state litigation; Product liability litigation; Securities litigations; and Large and small scale investigations (cross-border, U.S. government, FCPA, and internal) In her role, Ms. Miyake has managed and coordinated various multi-language electronic discovery projects, applied eDiscovery approaches to investigation, and contributed to minimizing cost by utilizing analytics tools and predictive coding. Throughout her career, Ms. Miyake has played an integral role in planning  and organising multi-language document reviews , and has trained attorneys, in-house legal and compliance team members on effective and efficient use of eDiscovery approaches.

David is a professor at Keio University Law School in Tokyo.  He teaches a wide range of subjects including Comparative Corporate Law, International Business Transactions, and Corporate Governance and Risk Management. David’s research interests focus on corporate law, corporate governance and energy law and regulatory policy.

From 2012 to 2015, David co-founded and served as CEO/Representative Director of Deneb Renewable Energy KK, a developer of solar power projects under Japan’s feed-in-tariff (FIT) for renewable energy. David previously served as a partner of Morrison & Foerster LLP, resident in Tokyo, and of O’Melveny & Myers LLP, resident in Los Angeles, Washington DC, and Tokyo.  He was recognized by industry publications as a leading lawyer in the corporate/M&A and investment funds areas.

Risa Imaizumi is a legal manager with Microsoft Japan, Ltd., Co. in Tokyo, where she works on licensing, services (support and consulting) and consumer related business support.  Since the joining of the company in 2002, she has been working on various issues on software, hardware and cloud related deals with her internal business clients and external counsels. As a member of a multinational corporation, Risa has been working closely with colleagues worldwide. For example, when a regulatory issue around cloud services come up, she works closely with her colleagues at the headquarters in the US and APAC region.  She also service as a committee member of an industry association for improvement of the Japanese government procurement system. Prior to joining Microsoft Japan, Risa worked as a practical trainee at an US law firm in New Jersey and for a Japanese trading company. She holds a BA of law from Keio University in Tokyo and LLM from the New York University of School of Law. 
 
Natsue Ishida

As the General Counsel Japan, Natsue Ishida is responsible for directing all legal matters relating to the entities of L’Oreal group in Japan, overseeing legal activities covering corporate, intellectual property, marketing, distribution, R&D, manufacturing and other areas.  As the Japan Data Protection Officer, she leads the initiatives of the Data Protection Committee in Japan to advance compliance efforts of the company in line with the Act on the Protection of Personal Information and L’Oreal group policies in line with EU’s General Data Protection Regulation. Before joining L'Oreal, Ms. Ishida worked as the Head of Legal Department and a member of the Board of Directors at a major medical device/electronics company and as a Legal Counsel for a major securities company in Tokyo. Her international experience includes working in the US and Europe in the areas of data protection and transfer pricing practice at the international headquarters of a large multinational accounting firm. In addition to general corporate practice, her areas of focus include data protection, information security, corporate compliance, professional ethics, information technology, intellectual property and international taxation. Ms. Ishida holds a J.D. from a US law school and is a member of the New York State Bar.

In the past six years William has handled some of Asia’s most complex and technical transaction risk placements including Japan’s three largest insured deals. Hideaki Umetsu is a partner at Mori Hamada & Matsumoto.  He focuses on, among others, international and domestic M&A transactions, Asia practice, and general corporate law and securities.  He also has expertise in other emerging markets including Brazil, Mexico and Turkey.  He was admitted to the Bar in 2004 in Japan and to the New York Bar in 2010.  Umetsu was educated at the University of Tokyo (LL.B., 2003) and the University of Chicago Law School (LL.M., 2009).  From 2006 to 2007, he worked as an associate director at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, where he was in charge of M&A-related laws and regulations with a particular focus on management buy-outs.  He also worked as a foreign temporary associate at Davis Polk & Wardwell from 2009 to 2010.
