Sven-Erik Batenburg, Head of Legal & Compliance, the European Chamber of Commerce in Korea (ECCK)

Sven-Erik  Batenburg  is  Head  of  Legal  &  Compliance  at  the  European  Chamber  of  Commerce  in  Korea,  a  non-profit  organization for companies  conducting business in or related to Korea.   In  such  capacity,  Mr.  Batenburg  operates,  amongst others, ECCK’s  IPR  Committee,  which  serves  as  the  prime communication  channel  with  government  authorities  on  IP matters, raises public awareness of IP challenges and provides assistance  to  member  companies  facing  intellectual  property issues.

As former Intellectual Property Manager at JT International, Mr. Batenburg  was  responsible  for  protecting  and  expanding  the trademark  portfolio  of  one  of  the  company’s  global  flagship brands.   Prior to that, Mr. Batenburg worked as Legal Staff at the Arbitration  and  Mediation  Center  of  the  World  Intellectual  Property  Organization  (WIPO), where he was in charge of the “.NL” domain name dispute resolution system.

Mr. Batenburg holds a Master’s degree in Information Law from the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

Scott A. Warren, Esq., General Manager, Epiq Systems G.K.

Scott Warren is a licensed US attorney who began his legal career litigating and arbitrating civil cases in California before moving to Japan in 1993. He spent 13 years as in-house counsel as the first foreign general counsel for Sega Enterprises, and then as senior corporate attorney for Microsoft.  In those capacities, he handled a breadth of matters including overseeing several competition matters, litigation disputes, IP licensing, transaction agreements, anti-counterfeiting and anti-cybercrime efforts, employment matters and internal investigations.  He was the Asia Regional Managing Director for Legal Technologies for a large risk consultancy and now oversees Epiq Systems, a world leader in legal technologies, providing eDiscovery and document review services in North Asia, working with corporations, and the law firms that support them, on issues where the Law and Technology collide.  Many of those have involved anti-corruption investigation in various industries and countries in Asia.  As such, he has been working in and around digital evidence in Asia for the last 20 years. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Robert Surh, Director/Head Counsel, Deloitte Anjin

Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Robert graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with dual degrees in Political Science and Philosophy and received his J.D. from Villanova University School of Law in 2001.

Robert draws from a wide spectrum of experience including the representation of clients in complex national class action litigations in the US, corporate experience as an in-house counsel at large Korean conglomerates, and now as the Head Counsel of Deloitte Anjin, LLC’s Discovery and Dispute support teams.  

Prior to joining Forensic & Dispute Services (F&DS) in Deloitte Anjin LLC, he was Chief Legal Counsel for a large Korean fashion company, worked as in-house counsel for one of the biggest technology companies in Korea and practiced as a class action lawyer in Philadelphia, PA.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Benjamin Hughes, Professor, Seoul National University School of Law

Benjamin Hughes is an independent arbitrator and associate professor of law at Seoul National University Law School.  

Professor Hughes has extensive experience as counsel in international arbitrations around the world and under most major arbitration rules.  He practiced international arbitration at Shearman & Sterling (in the US and Singapore), and was the founding co-chair of the international dispute resolution practice group at Shin & Kim, one of Korea's oldest and largest full service law firms.

Professor Hughes ceased practice as a lawyer and has practiced only as an arbitrator and mediator since March 2013.  Since then, he has been appointed as the sole, chair or co-arbitrator in arbitrations under rules of the ICC, SIAC, HKIAC, UNCITRAL, KLRCA, CIETAC, ACICA and KCAB, as well as ad-hoc arbitrations.  He has also been appointed as an emergency arbitrator and as an arbitrator in expedited proceedings.  

Professor Hughes is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators, the Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators and the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration.  He also serves as Executive Committee Member of the Seoul International Dispute Resolution Center, Member of the International Arbitration Committee of the KCAB, and Director of the Korean Council for International Arbitration.

In 2011, Professor Hughes was made an honorary citizen of Seoul by Mayor Park Won-Soon in recognition of his contributions to the legal community.

Jessica Park, Legal Officer, IP Disputes Management Section, WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center In Singapore


Jessica Park is an admitted attorney in Georgia, United States Of America, and holds a J.D. from Emory University School of Law and a Bachelor Of Arts in English Literature and English Language from Yonsei University in Seoul, Republic of Korea. Before joining World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) in 2011, she worked as Corporate Counsel in a multinational company in Atlanta, USA. After working at WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Centre in Geneva for three years, she is currently the WIPO Centre’s representative at Maxwell Chambers in Singapore

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Jun Hee Kim, General Counsel, Hyundai Heavy Industries

Jun Hee Kim is the International General Counsel for Hyundai Heavy Industries. He is responsible for overseeing all international legal matters for Hyundai Heavy, including the company's international dispute resolution and overseas legal risk management.  Mr. Kim also has significant prior experience serving as counsel in a wide range of international arbitration proceedings.

Prior to joining Hyundai Heavy, Mr. Kim was an arbitration partner with Korea's largest law firm, where he served as counsel in international arbitrations under diverse rules including the ICC, AAA, SIAC, HKIAC, LCIA, KCAB, SCC, NAI, and UNCITRAL.  He previously also practiced in the areas of international trade disputes and arbitration with Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and Perkins Coie LLP in Washington, DC.

In addition to his work as arbitration counsel, Mr. Kim has served as sole, presiding, and co-arbitrator in domestic and international arbitration cases.  He is member on the panel of arbitrators for SIAC, KCAB, BAC, CAA, and the KLRCA; and his currently serving as a member of the HKIAC Council, as well as a Director of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators-Korea Chapter.

Joongi Kim, Professor of Law, Associate Dean for International Affairs, Yonsei Law School

Joongi Kim is Professor of Law and Associate Dean for International Affairs at Yonsei Law School. He has a forthcoming treatise INTERNATIONAL ARBITRATION IN KOREA (Oxford University Press). A former attorney at Foley & Lardner in Washington, D.C. and Scholar-in-Residence at WilmerHale’s International Arbitration Group, he has acted as a presiding arbitrator, sole arbitrator, co-arbitrator, mediator and counsel in institutional and ad hoc proceedings under the rules of the ICC, JCAA, JAMS, KCAB, LMAA, SIAC and UNCITRAL, involving parties from Austria, British Virgin Islands, China, Cyprus, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Japan, Korea and Singapore as well as the UK and US. He also serves on the panel of arbitrators for the Korea-EU Free Trade Agreement, Korea-US Free Trade Agreement, Global Green Growth Institute and ICSID in addition to CAA, CIETAC, CRCICA, DIAC, HKIAC, JCAA, KCAB, KLRCA, SCIA, SHIAC and SIAC.

Currently a Vice President of the Korean Council for International Arbitration and an editorial board member for the International Investment Law and Arbitration (Brill), Asian Journal of Comparative Law (Cambridge University Press) and Korean Arbitration Review, he holds academic degrees from Columbia, Yonsei, and Georgetown.

Nicolai Nahrgang, General Counsel & Head of Legal, Tax and Compliance, Continental Automotive Korea

Dr. Nahrgang is General Counsel of Germany headquartered automotive supplier Continental Korea. He has responsibility for managing the legal and compliance affairs for the eight Korean Continental subsidiaries. Previously, from 2009 to April 2014, he was a senior foreign attorney at Korean law firm Kim & Chang.

Dr. Nahrgang started his legal career as an M&A lawyer in the corporate department of US law firm Weil Gotshal & Manges LL.P.’s Frankfurt/M. office.
