Citigroup, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and PCCW-HKT took home the top in-house honours at The Macallan ALB Hong Kong Law Awards 2014 on Sep. 5.
Citigroup bagged the prestigious Hong Kong In-House Team of the Year prize, and also won awards for the Banking and Financial Services In-House Team of the Year, Debt Market Deal of the Year, and Hong Kong Deal of the Year.
Alibaba Group’s debt financing was revealed as both the Debt Market Deal and Hong Kong Deal of the Year.
The Awards event also recognised individual excellence, with KKR’s Daniel Lee and PCCW-HKT’s Philana Poon jointly winning the award for In-House Lawyer of the Year.
“I feel humbled and very grateful for this recognition from the legal community in Hong Kong,” said Poon.
“I have been a part of this community for more than two decades, and am honoured to be in the company of so many talented professionals. It is so rewarding to see that my contribution to this community has been recognised.”
Looking ahead, Poon added that Hong Kong’s legal market is getting more sophisticated.
“There are a lot more firms now offering a broad scope of Hong Kong and overseas capabilities in very niche areas, and there are more and more talented young lawyers out there. I think the key is to continue to offer opportunities and encouragement to young lawyers to develop their expertise and practice areas. I encourage my team members to be open and frank with me so that I can try to address their career goals and concerns at work.”
The 13th annual The Macallan ALB Hong Kong Law Awards, held at the Conrad Hotel in Hong Kong, recognised Hong Kong’s best law firms, legal work and lawyers across a total of 40 categories. The evening entertained around 400 high-profile legal luminaries, including globally renowned law firms, in-house counsel and business leaders in Hong Kong and North Asia.
