Mori Hamada & Matsumoto and Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu led the final awards tally at the ALB Japan Law Awards 2018 with nine gongs each, followed closely by Morrison & Foerster with eight. 

Held on June 13 at the Ritz-Carlton Tokyo, the awards saw MHM land the Japan Law Firm Of The Year award, while Nagashima Ohno was named as the Japan Deal Firm of the Year. MoFo picked a number of high-profile awards as well, including International Deal Firm of the Year, Dispute Resolution Lawyer of the Year, and the BMW Award of Woman Lawyer of the Year. The latter two were won by partner Louise C. Stoupe.

Other key law firm awards went to Herbert Smith Freehills, which was named International Arbitration Law Firm of the Year; Akifusa Takada of Baker McKenzie (Gaikokuho Joint Enterprise), who picked up Dealmaker of the Year; and Edward Cole of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, who landed the Managing Partner of the Year gong. 

On the in-house side, IBM Japan was named as the Japan In-House Team of the Year, while the title of In-House Lawyer of the Year went to Yuichiro Watanabe of Airbnb.

ALB Japan Law Awards 2018: Nishimura leads noms

Law firm Nishimura & Asahi leads the nominations for the ALB Japan Law Awards 2018, coming in as a finalist in a whopping 35 of the categories. It is closely followed by its fellow Big Four law firms: Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu has 34 nominations, while Anderson Mori & Tomotsune and Mori Hamada & Matsumoto have 32 each.
