The ever-evolving law firm of Thomson Playford Cutlers has again changed name: its new simplified moniker is Thomsons Lawyers.

The firm has been through a number of mergers and name changes in recent years; it merged with the Melbourne office of Dibbs Abbott Stillman last year and with Sydney firm Cutler Hughes & Harris in 2008, which led to the name Thomson Playford Cutlers. Prior to this the firm was called Thomson Playford, and before this Thomsons Barristers and Solicitors. The firm’s history can be traced back to the firm Varley Even and Thomson Lawyers, established in Adelaide in 1885.

Chief executive partner Adrian Tembel said the name Thomson has been central to the firm’s identity and principles for over 90 years and “will continue to be”. Thomsons Lawyers has 350 partners, lawyers and staff across offices in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

Another firm steep in history undergoing a re-brand is IP specialist Watermark. The firm last week launched a new practice and brand called Intellectual Asset Management (IAM). According to CEO Chris Line, the launch signals the start of a new era at Watermark, a 150-year-old boutique IP firm.
