Global sports brand.  You will work on a wide range of legal and regulatory work related to the core business in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.  Role will suit a lawyer with a passion and knowledge of the sport.

 

Reporting Line & Team

To General Counsel, China. You will be an integral part of an expanding, multicultural and talented legal team.

 

Role

  • Support senior business leaders at the Client and be required to provide fast and decisive advice to the General Counsel and business leaders.
  • Liaise directly with government departments and external parties including licensing partners.
  • Attorney has to be solutions-oriented.
  • Role will be initially based out of Beijing with option to move to Shanghai office

Job Scope

  • Will directly participate in external commercial negotiations. Negotiate, draft and advise on various commercial operational agreements including agreements relating to:
    • Assist in the brainstorming and creation of new business models and legal structures to conduct live sport tournaments and other on-ground community sport-related events
    • Assist in the brainstorming and creation of new business models and legal structures to conduct branded attractions (e.g. Client Playzone, Client branded indoors children’s play area),client branded restaurants and retail stores
    • General commercial licensing and sales of branded products and services.
  • Design, supervise and ensure implementation of long term working relationships with government authorities and commercial partners in relation to the above businesses.

 

Key Requirements

  • Verbal and written fluency in Chinese/Mandarin and English
  • Contracts are primarily in English and may occasionally be bilingual
  • Negotiations and working language in the office and with external parties require both Mandarin and English fluency.
  • Ideal candidate is currently working in an in-house legal capacity in a prominent mainland Chinese, Asian or international sports business, or a digital or TV media business.
  • Ideal PQE level set at 8+ years but candidates outside of these parameters that meet other requirements are welcome to apply
  • Minimum 3 years’ post-qualification experience at a top international law firm, preferably with experience in commercial contracts and transactions with a mainland China connection
  • International experience required - worked at least two full years as a qualified lawyer in US, UK, Hong Kong, Taiwan or Singapore.
  • PRC, English, Hong Kong, New York or California bar qualification or equivalent.
  • Client will consider both private practice and in-house candidates. 
  • For in-house candidates, beyond those in the sports or TV media/ digital media sectors those in FMCG and gaming sectors will be looked upon favourably.
  • Experience in directly working with government authorities on projects strongly preferred (not only experience in applying for licenses and approvals)
