Job Description

Thomson Reuters is hiring a commercial lawyer to support Reuters.  Primary responsibilities are to negotiate and draft a wide range of transactional agreements, inform commercial policy, and advise on new business ventures and opportunities.  The role is global, with a focus on Asia, and is based in Singapore.

Major Responsibilities/Accountabilities

 

  • Provide commercial legal support to Reuters Media, which includes News Agency, Reuters Plus, Reuters.com and Reuters TV.  The News Agency business sells text, pictures and video editorial content to media organizations around the world; other Reuters businesses sell products and custom content solutions to marketers, ad agencies, governments and broadcasters.
  • Draft and negotiate a wide range of transactional agreements of different types, including sales, advertising, licensing, marketing and distribution, and covering different platforms, such as multimedia, online, mobile, digital and wire services.
  • Partner with Reuters lawyers around the world to provide coordinated, seamless and timely commercial support on a global scale.
  • Inform global commercial policy.
  • Advise sales and business teams on contractual rights and duties, contract interpretation and pre-litigation dispute resolution.
  • Identify legal solutions to enable our business to: compete in a rapidly-evolving media market; focus on the customer; accelerate growth; and prioritize the things that matter most for our customers and business partners.
  • Identify opportunities to introduce innovative and efficient legal solutions for the business.
  • Safeguard the Trust Principles, which uphold Reuters’ integrity, independence and freedom from bias.
  • Report and escalate compliance issues to the Chief Counsel, Reuters and/or the Thomson Reuters Compliance Department.
  • Select and manage external counsel around the world.
  • Reports to the Associate General Counsel, Reuters, who is based in London.

 

Scope and Impact

Covers all Reuters businesses around the world to provide commercial and transactional legal support.  Counsel senior business leaders and international sales staff on commercial deals, policy, and legal issues affecting the news and media industry.

 

Mandatory Skills & Experience

 

  • Significant post-qualification experience negotiating commercial contracts, including complex transactions, and managing commercial disputes. 
  • Experience counseling clients in the news and media industry.
  • Strong background in copyright and intellectual property, including licensing.
  • Ability to communicate with Reuters’ commercial team and lawyers across diverse geographies and cultures.
  • Demonstrated ability to give practical, creative and timely legal advice that will power Reuters’ commercial business and leading role in the news and media industry.
  • Ability to thrive as part of a diverse, global team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to engage effectively with senior management.
  • Strong work ethic with ability to take initiative, prioritise, work independently and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • High level of integrity and professionalism.

 

Desirable Skills and Experience

 

  • Deep understanding of the news and media industry, and Reuters’ core values of independence, integrity and freedom from bias in the gathering and dissemination of news. 
  • Able to think strategically and creatively to resolve legal issues and focus on critical areas of maximum impact for the business.  Intellectually rigorous and commercially savvy.
  • Able to build rapport and trust with internal and external stakeholders, and to build and maintain strong relationships remotely, on a global scale.
  • Effectively manage external counsel around the world.

 

Certifications / Education

 

  • Law degree and current practicing lawyer.
