Mori Hamada & Matsumoto M&A lawyers Satoko Kuwabara and Shin Kikuchi have left to co-found a new firm called Gaien Partners in Tokyo along with partners Junichi Tobimatsu and Hisafumi Sato.

While Sato was earlier at local firm Shiomizaka, Tobimatsu had his own practice, Tobimatsu Law, which was founded in 2016.

Gaien Partners will focus on M&A,  dispute resolution, crisis management, labour law, regulatory, restructuring, and general corporate matters.

Clifford Chance and Nishimura & Asahi have acted for private equity firm CVC Capital Partners on its 17-billion-yen ($1.2 billion) acquisition of Sogo Medical Group, Japan’s fifth-biggest pharmacy by store numbers. Sogo was represented by Mori Hamada & Matsumoto.
