     Justice A S Aguiar, Former Judge, Bombay High Court and Executive Chairman of the Goa State Legal Services Authority

    Justice Aloysius Stanislaus Aguiar, B.A., LL.B. : Was born on October 8, 1943. He was enrolled as an Advocate on August 14, 1969 by the Bar council of Maharashtra. Thereafter, he signed Articles of Clerkship with a firm of Solicitors. He passed Solicitors' Articleds Clerk's Examination in 1976 and, thereafter, functioned as Advocate/Solicitor's Assistant for short periods. He started independent practice in 1984. He was appointed as Judge, Bombay City Civil Court and Additional Sessions Judge, Greater Bombay with effect from September 11,1987. He also functioned as Special Judge for Greater Bombay under the Prevention of Corruption Act from 1993 to 1996. Thereafter, he has functioned as Additional Principal Judge and Principal Judge, City Civil Court & Sessions Judge. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on March 28, 2001 and further extension up to March 28, 2005. Retired on October 8, 2005.

    Dr. Akhil Prasad

    Dr. Akhil Prasad is Director, Country Counsel India and Company Secretary with Boeing India and is based at New Delhi. Dr Prasad has also headed legal functions in India of Fidelity, The Walt Disney Company, General Motors, Electrolux and Xerox and has about over 25 years’ experience as an In-house Counsel.

    Akhil holds a Doctorate in Law, Doctorate in Commerce; LL.M – India; Fellow Member of the ICSI (FCS) and the ICSA, UK (FCIS); non-practicing Solicitor of England & Wales; LL.M from the Northwestern University, Chicago and Certificate in Business Administration from IE University, Madrid, Spain (IE); and Wharton Advanced Management Program.

    Akhil is a visiting faculty with some of the National Law Universities; Delhi School of Economics; ISB Mohali; IIT Delhi and Kharagpur; MDI Gurugram and Murshidabad; OP Jindal Global University; IIMs; IIFT; TAPMI Manipal; Jamia Millia; FMS and IILM University, Gurugram. Akhil has also judged international moot competitions at NLU Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, Army Institute of Law, Mohali and participated as a panelist at the i5-Summit on Start-ups organized by IIM Indore and IIT Indore. 

    Anupam Sharan
    Vice President, Legal, Genpact India Pvt. Ltd.

    He is a senior attorney managing strategic legal, contractual and commercial programs globally for over $4 Billion spend per annum. He has extensive legal and contractual experience in drafting, negotiation, corporate, commercial including International law, M&A, government affairs, risk, governance, change, compliance and privacy matters. He seeks to channelize business and operational insights to provide thought leadership within the industry and contribute to shape laws, regulations and public policies. He brings experience across multiple industries such as consulting, banking and financial services, telecom, outsourcing, IT, ITES, steel, power and construction. He has good experience in working closely with Operations / stakeholder functions and helping build appreciation to the contractual obligations and commitments.

    He is a regular speaker at various conferences, with many articles and white paper published to his name. He has dual qualification of Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering (B.E.) and Bachelor’s in Legislative Law (LL.B.) with Master’s in Business and IPR Law (LL.M) added with various certifications. He also serves as the India Council Board member at IACCM (International Association for Contract and commercial Management), USA. He is also a certified Director from IOD (institute of Directors).

    Anupriya Garg
    Head of Legal and Company Secretary, Transrail Lighting Limited

    Anupriya Garg is Masters in Laws, MBA and Company Secretary with experience in corporate laws for more than 16 years. Currently she is working as the Head of Legal and Company Secretary in Transrail Lighting Limited an Indian MNC into tower manufacturing and Power and Transmission business. The Company is having its footprints in more than 39 countries.

    Prior to this she has worked in Indian Government as Head Legal in Noida Metro Rail Corporation a JV of State government and Central Government with more than INR 10,000 crores project of 29.7 kms metro line and city bus service right from its inception and taking care of all their legal and corporate affairs matters and dealing with top bureaucrats . The city bus service was awarded “the best project India Recognition award" at Montreal, Canada at UITP global summit of Urban Public Transport in May 2017. It was further conferred with a special award under the category “Best City Bus Service Project” for best practice projects in urban transport. The award has been given by the Government of India,Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

    She started her career with PANASONIC India Limited and has worked with many Corporates like Amtek Auto Limited and Federal Mogul Goetze India Limited and advised on the corporate laws, fund raising, localisation of global policies and restructuring.

    Has vast MNC Experience working with Global leaders with multi-culture background and thus having expertise in working in diverse culture and cross functional departments successfully meeting the ultimate organisational goals and creating legal awareness Ensuring high level of ethic and integrity management by imparting trainings, internal policies and contractual management on various legal issues including Anti Trust Laws and Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

     

    Bhumesh Verma
    Managing Partner, Corp Comm Legal

    Bhumesh is the Managing Partner of Corp Comm Legal, an independent Indian law firm headquartered in New Delhi.

    Having started his career at Ajay Bahl & Co. (now part of AZB & Partners), Bhumesh went on to work with some of the best law firms in India. He received the coveted Chevening Scholarship by the UK Government in 2000 whereunder he studied in College of Law, York and was a visiting lawyer with Ashursts’ London office. Later in his career, he became partner at some of the leading Indian law firms including Khaitan & Co., Paras Kuhad & Associates and Link Legal.

He also conducts workshops and training sessions (on invite) for students and professionals on contracts drafting, negotiation and corporate laws skills.

    Bhumesh has authored 2 books on Commercial Contracts Drafting and edited one on Mergers & Acquisitions (published by Bloomsbury) so far and aspires to write a book every year on a different corporate law subject.

    Dinesh Shetty
    General Counsel & Company Secretary, Titan

    Dinesh is the General Counsel & Company Secretary of the Company. He heads the Legal & Secretarial functions of the Company. He holds a Master Degree in Commerce and LLB from Mumbai University, and is a Fellow Member of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India.He has over 25 years of experience in the field of Corporate & Securities Laws, Litigation, Arbitration, Corporate Finance, Mergers & Acquisitions and Corporate Governance.
    In his previous assignment with Mahindra Holidays & Resorts India Ltd., the Leisure & Hospitality Sector of the Mahindra Group, he has worked as General Counsel & Company Secretary for over six years. Prior to Mahindra Group, he has worked with Schenectady Herdillia Limited (SI Group), Marsh India Insurance Brokers Private Limited (Marsh & McLennan Companies,) and Parle AgroPrivate Limited.

    Divya Kumat
    Executive Vice President, Chief Legal Officer & Company Secretary, Datamatics

    Divya Kumat is the EVP-Chief Legal Officer & Company Secretary at Datamatics for more than 15 years. She leads all legal and secretarial initiatives for more than 30  group companies in India and overseas and is a key player in all in-organic initiatives of the group like joint venture collaborations, mergers, acquisitions, and amalgamation in India and overseas. She is credited with formulating and enforcing several legally binding policies and frameworks including the Contract Management Policy, Insider Trading Policy, Whistle-Blower policy, and Investor Grievance policy, to name a few. The legal team has successfully secured various copyrights, trademarks and service mark registrations thereby enhancing the company’s IPR wealth.

    Divya brings with her over 23 years of rich and diverse experience, having held prominent legal and secretarial positions for leading corporations. Prior to joining Datamatics, she was the Legal Head at Computer Sciences Corporation (India).

    A proud recipient of several notable awards and recognitions viz. Leading Woman Company Secretary 2011; Leading Woman-Owned Innovative Project Award 2013;  Best Use of Technology & Innovation in Legal 2013; General Counsel of the Year 2014 (Female); Best IT Legal Business Leader 2017 - India by AI 2017 [UK] and Star Echelon – In-house Category during The Leadership Summit & Excellence Awards, 2017,  Top 100 General Counsels of India in 2017 by Legal500 and as Star Women in Law of the Year 2019.     Divya has addressed various forums in India and overseas as a guest speaker or key note speaker or panel member or moderator on various topics. Her articles on Indian Litigations (October 2017), and on Restrictive Covenants in Employment Laws (January 2019) were published in the International Legal Magazine by Cambridge University Press.

    Divya holds a dual Bachelor's Degree in Commerce (Honors) and Law (LLB). As a Gold Medalist in LLM, her final thesis presentation was on the subject of International Arbitration. She is a fellow member of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (FCS) and a merit holder in ICSA, London. Recently, she has completed certification coure on Corporate Governance.

    Debolina Partap
    General Counsel and Vice President Legal, Wockhardt

    Debolina is a Gold Medalist in masters of law and has 25 years of experience in banking, finance, pharma and healthcare. She is responsible for M&As, transactions management, IP and Litigation Management, legal compliance, all corporate legal work, properties and real estate management, amongst others. She advises top management on legal risks to the organization. Her main achievements come in handling complex M&A deals on the buy as well as sell side, high stake real estate arbitrations, international regulatory and commercial litigations and settling complicated insolvency petitions filed against Wockhardt Limited as also, settling intricate derivatives suits filed against Wockhardt group globally. She is also handling legal issues pertaining to complex and composite global regulatory matters concerning Wockhardt Group. She is one of the few general counsels globally who handle forensics and data analytics. She and her team have won over 75 awards from Internationally and Nationally recognized legal organizations.

    Garima Nahar
    General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer, Eight Capital

    Garima is the General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer at Eight Capital. Garima is a legal professional having over fifteen years of diverse experience in various banking and financial transactions. Prior to joining Eight Capital, she worked as the General Counsel at IIFL Finance. She was instrumental in setting up the legal team at IIFL focusing on NBFC business and strategy.

    Garima was a Member on the ESG Committee of the Board of IIFL Finance and acted as Chief ESG Coordinator and Chief Anti Corruption Officer. She was instrumental to create Environmental, Social and Governance framework and policies at IIFL and played a key role in delivering additional value from E&S improvements perspective across different portfolio at IIFL.

    Garima also worked with ICICI Bank at Corporate Legal Advisory as Senior Group Head and with Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP at New York. She has extensively worked and focused on capital markets, corporate lending and restructuring, treasury, derivatives, structured financial products, wholesale and retail products and on regulatory practice. She is a gold medalist, holding B.A.LL.B (Hons.) degree from National Law Institute University, Bhopal.

    Jayadeep Balakrishnan
    Group Legal Head, Vice President Legal and Corporate Secretarial, TFS Group of Companies

    Has nearly 20 years of work experience in handling legal and compliance functions with various reputed and leading national and multinational companies. Currently working as Vice President Legal & Corporate Secretarial-Group Legal Head for TFS Group of Companies. He is also a Director on board of many companies.
    Prior to joining TFS, he had worked with Landmark Group, METRO Cash & Carry, Future Group, Café Coffee day etc.
    He has completed LLM in International Law and MBA in Personnel & Marketing.

     

    Justice Mohinder Mohan Singh Bedi
    Former Judge, Punjab and Haryana High Court

    Between the period of 1980 - 1995 he practiced as an Advocate in the High Court of Punjab and Haryana, Supreme Court of India and District Courts of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh in various fields i.e. Civil, Criminal, Constitutional and Local Laws. 
    He also Practiced on the Original Side before the Civil Courts, Criminal Courts, District Courts and Administrative Tribunals and various Vigilance and Departmental Inquiries.

    • Selected as Additional District and Sessions Judge on 01.08.1995 and remained posted in different Districts in the State of Punjab, i.e. District Sangrur (from 1995 to 1998), District Moga (from 1998 to March 2001).
    • Designated as Special Judge under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 and Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act,1985
    • Promoted as District & Sessions Judge and posted in District Ferozepur (from April 2001 to 2004; and U.T. Chandigarh (from March 5, 2005 till April 2006). Exercised powers under the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996
    • Deputed to the post of Registrar Judicial of Punjab and Haryana High Court from 2004 till March 2005 and entrusted with the Administrative working of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana.
    • Elevated as Judge, Punjab and Haryana High Court at Chandigarh on 01.04.2006. (INDIA)
    • Administrative Judge of Districts Bhiwani, Karnal, Faridabad in Haryana and Ferozepur, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar in Punjab.
    • Remained Company Judge from January 2017 to June 2017 in the High Court.
    • As Judge of High Court for the State of Punjab and Haryana, decided 7 cases of Full Bench, 4934 cases in Division Bench, 16 cases as a member of a Special Bench, 37,242 as Single Bench, totaling 42,199 till September 8, 2018.

    • Member, Administrative Committee, consisting of seven senior most Judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

    Justice Mohinder Mohan Singh Bedi has held a Solo Exhibition of more than 100 paintings last year which was inaugurated by a very well know Indian politician, television personality and former cricketer Mr. Navjot Sidhu. Amongst the extra-curricular activities he is also fond of Golf, Music, Painting and Dancing. Infact, he was adjudged as best dancer in all India youth festival in 1979-1980.

    Justice Mohinder Mohan Singh Bedi strongly believes in the line “all work and no play ..makes jack a Dull Boy” and likes to engage into extra-curricular activities in his free time.

    KARMA BHUTIA is the Legal Head – Director – Group Services – Anarock Property Consultants Private Limited. Mr. Bhutia graduated, from University of Calcutta and admitted to the New Delhi Bar Counsel. He is also a Master in Business Law from National Law School of India University. Mr. Bhutia’s areas of interest are Intellectual Property Rights, Arbitration & Conciliations, Anti-Dumping, Industrial Relations, Real Estate and Commercial Contracts.     Nitin presently is part of the Signify Legal Function(Growth Markets Team) as Market Head of Legal & Compliance, India Sub-Continent, Australia & New Zealand.

    Nitin has over the last 17 years handled functions covering Legal, Compliance, Governance, Insurance and Real Estate, while leading teams on mergers/ demergers/Corporate restructuring, acquisitions and integration of acquired companies, civil and criminal litigations and high-stake arbitrations. He has set up new plants, restructuring of company operations, established contract management processes, implemented global mandated compliance programs and managed complex projects with regional and global implications. His motto is- “Bringing Passion, Purpose, proficiency and technology in the legal function. Changing mindset to bring opportunities and proactiveness and being a key enabler to business change and success by driving business strategy through understanding business and effective collaboration to deliver results.” Nitin is an avid writer and contributing to articles for various legal journals.

    • He was listed in the GC Powerlist 2018 for India by Legal 500( top 100 GC's in India).
    • Named by ICCA with forewords from the Ministry of Law & Justice, India as amongst " India's finest in-house Counsels" at a function on 6th Oct, 2017.
    • On 10th Nov, 17- Philips Lighting in-house legal team has been selected for “The Legal 500 GC Powerlist India: Teams” which is an international recognition.

    He graduated with a B. Com (H) degree from Delhi University, a qualified Company Secretary from ICSI, Delhi, Law Graduate, PGDM (Finance) from AIMA, Delhi. He has a Masters Degree in Business Law from NLSIU, Bangalore. Recently completed an Execution education course with Signify collaborating with Harvard Business School.     Pathik Arora
    Director Legal & General Counsel, Senvion Wind Technology

    Pathik is a law graduate from University of Delhi and is also a fellow member of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India. He is an ardent legal professional with over 20 years of strong in house and law firm experience, of advising and servicing the market leaders in varied spaces – EPC in chemical and petrochemicals, Information Technology, real estate & construction, hotels & hospitality, renewable energy, infrastructure, health care, private equity investors, etc.

    Pathik is currently working with Senvion Wind Technology, a German conglomerate, one of the global leaders in design, manufacturing, installation and operations of wind turbines as Director Legal & General Counsel (head of Legal, Secretarial & Compliance) for Senvion in India. Previously, he also has served as Head of Legal, Secretarial & Compliance with InterGlobe Hotels and Azure Power.

    He brings strong expertise and execution skills to provide sustainable result-oriented approach in challenging environments, without compromising on the ethos of integrity, compliance and governance.

    He has rich experience of working in house (including at leadership roles) as well as in law firms, that spans across jurisdictions and covers a broad spectrum of legal, secretarial, estate management, compliance & governance practice including strategic & business advisory, structuring complex commercial transactions incl. cross border M&A, real estate acquisitions & PE investments, financing, risk assessment, setting up robust compliance programs encompassing FCPA, UKBA, POSH, litigation management, etc.

    He is an experienced advisor to the boards with ability to manage shareholders & JV partners relations. He has also lead CSR initiatives of the organisation(s) he has worked for, and has driven certain CSR projects to great success.

    Parul Kashyap
    Founder Partner, SunLegal

    Parul Kashyap is the Founder Partner of SunLegal, a boutique law firm based in New Delhi. Her practice primarily focusses on infrastructure projects, energy, public private partnerships (PPP), public procurement, project finance,  government contracts, corporate advisory and dispute resolution. Parul has a rich experience of having advised her clients on a variety of projects like roads, ports, highways, healthcare, power, renewables, leisure and real estate. She has advised all major stake holders including government authorities, multilateral organisations, international aid agencies, foreign governments, concessionaires, EPC contractors, lenders, design and engineering firms on various aspects of infrastructure development.     Rohit is the Global General Counsel of UPL Limited, one of the largest crop protection products company in the world with revenues of close to US$5 billion. He is based out of UPL’s corporate head office in Mumbai. Rohit leads a team of more than 40 in-house lawyers. Close to 50% of his team members are based outside of India, including 4 in the U.S.A., 5 in Europe and 5 in Brazil. Rohit overseeing all aspects of legal work relating to the group.

    Rohit is a law graduate (2002 batch) from Symbiosis Law College, Pune, India and has also completed a leadership in corporate counsel course from Harvard Law School in 2017.

    Dr. Sanjeev Gemawat is a General Counsel and Corporate Secretary; a thought leader and a strategist with business orientation. He is also a chartered secretary from UK, a chartered accountant and a cost & management accountant. 

    Dr. Gemawat has almost three decades of experience spanning through varied industries. He is presently working as Executive Director – Legal and Group Company Secretary with Dalmia Bharat Group – a conglomerate that carries a legacy of over 75 years and having presence in cement, sugar, refractories and power businesses. In the past he has been associated with leading groups like DLF, JCB, Olivetti, GBC, Modicorp etc.

He has been a part of various committees/delegations constituted by industry/professional bodies and interacted with multilateral trade bodies including WIPO, WTO, European Commission, and Law Society of England & Wales etc. Presently, Dr. Gemawat is a Co-Chairman of the Law & Justice Committee of PHDCCI. 

    He has been acknowledged and honoured as one of “India’s finest In-house counsels”, the most “Influential Corporate Counsel & Company Secretary” and also inducted to “Global Hall of Fame” for contribution and work in the Legal Eco System in India and the World.  Dr. Gemawat strives to work with other in-house counsels for a statutory recognition to the profession of inhouse counsels through amendments in extant laws. 

    Sheetal Sawhney Kapur
    Senior Counsel and Director - Legal, Netflix

    Sheetal is currently working with Netflix as the company’s Senior Counsel and Director-Legal. At Netflix, she is involved in lead business partnerships and transactions. Prior to joining Netflix, Sheetal was working at Google where she advised on structuring products for the Indian and West Asian markets. Her work involved dealing with privacy and data protection, regulatory liaisoning/licensing, M&A, FinTech & payments projects, geographic projects, telecom & broadcasting projects, and various other government-led initiatives. Sheetal moved to Google from PayU where she was working as Head - Legal, Regulatory and Compliance. She has also worked in the Private Equity and M&A team at J. Sagar Associates.

    Sheetal has been widely regarded as a pioneer in the sunrise sector of Payments Law in India. She has also worked in the M&A and private equity practice at JSA. She holds an LLM from the University of Melbourne and an LLB from ILS Law College, Pune.

    Sheetal is an Executive Committee Member - Privacy and Data Protection of the Indian National Bar Association. She has  been awarded for her work by various organizations in the legal fraternity.

    Sonal is currently the Head of Legal for NBS India and NGSC Hyderabad Site operations. She is advising on their shared function legal matters and is part of NBS leadership in India. Prior to Novartis, Sonal worked with Atos as their General Counsel for Atos and its subsidiary companies in India and Deputy General Counsel for APAC..     ELIGIBILITY 

    How do I know if I am eligible to make a submission?
    We highly encourage all firms, individuals and in-house teams to submit, as we have numerous award categories to choose from. We welcome both past participants and newcomers to join the submission for the awards.
     
    Is self-nomination permitted?
    Yes, we accept self-nominated submissions. We also accept third-party submissions, should you wish to nominate an external party or vice versa.
     
    Is there a fee required to make a submission in the law awards?
    No, there is no fee payment required for you or your firm/team to make a submission.
     
    TIMELINE OF EVENTS
     
    When will the finalists and winners be announced?
    The shortlist of finalists will be released around 4-8 weeks prior to the awards ceremony. The winners will be exclusively announced at the awards ceremony in February 2020 in Mumbai.
     
    When do the submissions open? When is the deadline to submit?
    The submissions are open. The deadline to submit your nomination is 4 December 2019. For any further questions relating to submissions, please contact lokesh.bogati@tr.com.
     
    NOMINATION PROCESS AND ASSESSMENT
     
    How are the finalists chosen?
    Asian Legal Business will compile all of the submission entries, and the ALB editorial and research teams will extensively review each submission to ensure the criteria are met in order to advance to the shortlist of finalists. We stress that this process is fair, impartial and not subject to external influences.
     
    How are the winners chosen?
    Once the shortlist of finalists have been announced, an independent judging panel will review and select their top three choices for the award categories they are assigned to. The scores for each award category will be tabulated, and the individual/firm/team with the highest score will be announced as the winner.
     
    What are the award categories that I can take part in?
    Any law firms, in-house teams or individuals may take part in multiple award categories if appropriate.  The award categories are subject to change at the discretion of ALB. The researchers reserve the right to move entries from one category to another if they feel it appropriate. The researchers’ decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into.
     
    Who will be on the judging panel for ALB India Law Awards 2020?
    There will be an independent judging panel of at least 30 senior and expert legal industry leaders to review the submission materials. The judging panel will be selected on the basis of their expertise and knowledge, and will be comprised from various sectors to correspond to the diverse list of award categories. A partial list of judges’ names will be released prior to the awarding ceremony, and the remaining judges will be revealed on the evening of the awards.
     
    What will my contact information/my client’s information be used for?
    All contact information provided will not be disclosed to external parties; and will only be seen by our ALB research team and the judges panel. We keep the information on record internally, in case we need to contact you or your client regarding any questions or discrepancies in the submission form.
     
    Where will my name/firm name/team name be published if we are a finalist or winner?
    As a finalist and/or winner, your firm/team/individual name will be published in ALB awards materials and print magazine. For more information, please contact us.
     
    Is my submission confidential?
    Any information you submit will only be reviewed by the ALB team and independent judging panel, whose names will be published. The material submitted will only be disclosed to the above; if there is any information that is strictly confidential, please mark clearly on the nomination form. Though we do our best to maintain the security of the information you provide, any information you transmit to us is done at your own risk and Thomson Reuters is not responsible for any unauthorized transmission of information.
