Overview
Rapid technological innovation in the Society 5.0 and the lifestyle changes brought by the Covid-19 are rapidly changing the business models of companies. Legal, IP issues and grey areas need to be examined when companies launch new businesses utilizing those new technologies (such as technologies involving artificial intelligence (AI), metaverse and NFTs) that fit into the new lifestyle. What role should the In-House legal and legal/IP professionals play in accelerating business?

For example, the market for metaverse and NFTs is expanding recently worldwide and more companies are trying to create brand new business, sometimes collaborating with other tech companies.  Another example is AI and IoT area, where some new unexpected legal issues may arise. In these new technology areas, transactions are becoming more and more borderless, and international legal and intellectual property (IP) issues are further increasing.

Akiko Araki is the founder and Managing Partner of Araki International IP&Law (“Araki International”). Have expertise on entertainment law and intellectual property, and general corporate & commercial legal counseling accumulated through more than 10-year experience of in-house roles with Hollywood major studios in Japan as well as 4-year experience in private practice for a variety of international IP matters, with emphasis on strategic counseling and advocate of the Japanese entertainment practice in line with the Hollywood entertainment practice.

Yuki Shirato, Founder/Chief Operating Officer, Braid Technologies, Foreign Registered Lawyer (gaikoku hou jimu bengoshi) (NY State)
Yuki Shirato is currently a founder and the Chief Operating Officer of Braid Technologies, an advanced engineering design house. He is also an advisor to other startups, including Narō Corporation, a video streaming platform featuring Japanese culture, and Aquila Systems, an AI-based scheduling solution for medical professionals. Yuki also founded and is a managing director of Yakumi, a platform of angel investors.

Previously, he worked at top global law firms in New York City (Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP), Toronto (Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP), UAE (Shearman & Sterling LLP) and Tokyo (Shearman & Sterling LLP and White & Case LLP). He was involved in more than 50 billion USD worth mergers and acquisitions, funds formation / investment and financing transactions,
