    Asian Legal Business is hosting the 4th annual ALB Philippine Law Awards on November 22. The event aims to recognise and reward the outstanding performance of private practitioners and in-house teams that have significantly contributed to the ever-evolving legal landscape of the country. 

    The months-long research process will culminate in an awards night and black-tie gala dinner that will be graced by illustrious members of the bench, legal associations and business circles, law firms, in-house departments, and the legal academe in the Philippines.

    DOMINGO EGON Q. CAYOSA
    National President
    Integrated Bar of the Philippines

    Domingo Egon Q. Cayosa is a corporate and litigation lawyer and a leading advocate for environmental protection, alternative dispute resolution, and human rights.  He was President of IBP Cagayan Chapter and Chairperson of various IBP national committees.  He is a member of the Asean Law Association, Philippine Bar Association, and of the Vanguards of the Philippine Constitution.  He was elected unanimously as IBP Executive Vice President in May 2017 and assumed as IBP National President (2019-2021) on July 1, 2019.

    A multi-awarded civic leader, public servant and educator, Atty. Egon finished Bachelor of Laws, Masters in Business Administration, A.B. Economics, and Military Science and Tactics at the University of the Philippines where he was a cadet officer, student leader, and a scholar.   He graduated valedictorian at the San Jacinto Seminary, Tuguegarao, Cagayan and valedictorian at the Pamplona Central School.

    His advocacies and accomplishments merited major citations: Presidential Lingkod Bayan Award, Outstanding Cagayano Award, Outstanding Alumnus Award (San Jacinto Seminary), Philnabank Gawad Dangal Award, and Professional Achievement Award (U.P. Vanguard Fraternity).

    He and his wife, Atty. Maria Milagros Nolasco Fernan of Cebu City are blessed with four children: Andre, Marco, Clara and Niña.

    Jose Luis V. Agcaoili
    Immediate Past President
    Philippine Bar Association

    Jose Luis V. Agcaoili was designated Managing Partner of the firm AGCAOILI & ASSOCIATES in April 2001.  He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from De La Salle University and graduated with honors in 1981. He obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Civil Law in 1987, and passed the Bar Examination taken during the same year. He joined the firm as Associate Attorney in 1988 and has since had an extensive practice in Aviation and Aircraft Finance, Banking, Corporate and Commercial law, Criminal law, Family law, Labor law,  arbitration and litigation.

    Concurrent with his active law practice, Mr. Agcaoili worked as Chief of Staff at the Philippine Senate from the years 1992 to 1998, and trained in the areas of legislative research, policy formulation and various proceedings of the Committees on Health, Banking, Ways and Means, Games and Amusement, and Foreign Relations.

    Mr. Agcaoili is the immediate Past President of the Philippine Bar Association, having served in that capacity from September, 2018 to October, 2019.  He was chosen by the Asia Business Law Journal as one of the Philippines’ Top 100 Lawyers for 2018 and 2019.
     

    Ivy D. Patdu, MD, JD
    Deputy Commissioner
    National Privacy Comission

    Ivy D. Patdu is a physician, lawyer and health privacy advocate. Before joining the Commission, she worked with the National Telehealth Center of the University of the Philippines-Manila in establishing legal frameworks for Telemedicine, use of electronic health records, and other eHealth initiatives. She is a member of the National Health Data Privacy Experts Group of the National eHealth Program, assisting in the development of the Privacy Guidelines for the Philippine Health Information Exchange, one of the first sectoral privacy regulation in the country. Her previous areas of practice include risk management for healthcare providers, medico-legal and health policy development.

     

    Teofilo S. Pilando, Jr.
    Chairman
    Professional Regulation Commission

    Teofilo S. Pilando, Jr. was law clerk to a Supreme Court Justice, policy consultant to the Senate President, assistant to the Chief Presidential Legal Counsel, trustee of the Asset Privatization Trust, and Deputy Executive Secretary in the Office of the President. He is currently the Chairman of the Professional Regulation Commission.

     While in private practice, he served as National President of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines, arbitrator for the International Court of Arbitration, and consultant for World Bank and Asian Development Bank projects.

     

    Benedicta ‘Dick’ Du-Baladad 
    Governor
    Management Association of the Philippines

    Benedicta ‘Dick’ Du-Baladad is the Founding Partner, Chair and CEO of Du-Baladad & Associates (BDB Law), a tax law firm recognized by the International Tax Review as the 2018 Philippines’ Best Tax Dispute and Litigation Firm, and as the Asia Tax Policy Firm of the Year. 

    Dick is ranked by Asia Business Law Journal, as one of the Philippines’ top 100 lawyers (2018-2019) and was named by the International Tax Review as one of the 2018 Women in Tax Leaders. She is also ranked as a Leading Lawyer in Tax by the Chambers and Partners and as an Elite Practitioner in Tax by the Asialaw Profiles.

    Dick holds leadership role in various professional organizations. Currently, she is a Governor of the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP), a Co-Chair of the Capital Markets Development Council and the Chairman of the FINEX Academy. She was the president of the Financial Executives of the Philippines (FINEX) in 2017 and the Tax Management Association of the Philippines (TMAP) in 2015. Previously, she was also the Chairman of the tax committees of PCCI and PICPA.

    As a philanthropist, Dick believes that education is the solution to poverty. She created BDB law Foundation that focuses on building and donating school buildings and facilities to public schools in far–flung areas nationwide where access to good education and conducive learning environment is scarce, believing that ‘at least one college graduate for every Filipino home can save a whole family from poverty’. 

    Dick has authored 3 books on the taxation of banks, financial institutions and insurance companies in the Philippines. These books served as valuable reference materials for tax professionals, fiscal policymakers, academe and those in the business of financial intermediation. Her book ‘Taxation of Financial Institutions in the Philippines’ won an Anvil Award of Merit. 

    Dick is also a painter.  Her favourite medium is watercolour and her favourite subject is flower.   Dick is a mother to four boys. 
     

    Lope Manuel, Jr.
    Chief Compliance Officer, General Counsel and Vice President for Legal and Government Affairs
    Pepsi Cola Products Philippines, Inc.

    Lope Manule, Jr. develops and defines the legal standards and policy framework of Pepsi Philippines to ensure a culture of compliance and integrity. He also currently holds leadership positions on international business associations and is known for advocating public policies and influencing outcomes among diverse stakeholders to create favorable business climate in the country. He is a regular resource person of the World Intellectual Property Organizations for their official missions in the Asia Pacific. 

    Before joining Pepsi, he was the Head of Corporate Relations of Diageo, the largest alcohol company in the world. He is also well known for having created the ADR Office of the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines as its first Executive Director and was instrumental in the country’s accession to the Madrid Protocol which was recently upheld in a landmark decision of the Supreme Court. 

    Lope graduated on top of his class with a perfect GPA of 4.0 earning a Degree in International Business Laws from the consortium program of Chulalongkorn University, Kyushu University, Victoria University and University of British Columbia. He also has a law degree from the University of Toronto where he received an International Fellowship Award from the Centre for Innovation Law Policy.


     


    April Raimundo
    Legal and Compliance Director
    Greystar

    April Raimundo is the Legal and Compliance Director for Greystar’s Asia-Pacific business and their first employee in Singapore. In this role, she oversees Greystar’s Code of Conduct and regulatory compliance program in the region. In addition, April spearheads legal structuring, investor documentation and acquisition activities as Greystar, the global leader in residential housing starts to invest across the region. 

    Prior to Greystar, April spent 8 years at EFA Group as Chief Legal and Compliance officer and served as a member of the company’s executive committee. She is credited for setting up EFA Group’s global legal and compliance framework. During her private practice career, April was in the corporate and commercial group of Quisumbing Torres, a member firm of Baker McKenzie.

    April is qualified to practice law in England, Wales, and the Philippines. She was named one of 5 in house counsels in the 2016 edition of ALB’s 40 Under 40 Asia’s best young lawyers. She holds a Juris Doctor from the University of the Philippines where she was awarded the Dean's Medal for Academic Excellence. She also has a BS in Legal Management from the Ateneo de Manila University and attended executive development courses in various institutions including Harvard Business School. She sits in the International Relations Committee and Public Law Help Committee of the Law Society of Singapore. 
     

    Wan Marzimin
    Group General Counsel
    Malayan Banking Bhd

    Wan Marzimin practised as a corporate lawyer for more than a decade before he took up the role as in-house counsel. He was the General Counsel for 2 Malaysian public listed companies (and spent a few years in the UAE as in–house counsel) before joining Maybank in 2015 as its Group General Counsel and Company Secretary. He leads a team of lawyers and corporate secretarial/governance officers throughout the South East Asia region, Hong Kong, China, US and UK to manage Maybank’s legal risk and to ensure good corporate governance is practised.

    Maybank Legal Team won the Malaysian chapter for ALB’s Banking & Financial Services In-House Team of the Year for 2017 & 2018, and the Malaysian In-House Team of the Year for 2018 & 2019. Wan was awarded ALB’s Malaysian In-House Lawyer of the Year for 2019, and he went on to win the South East Asia’s In-House Lawyer of the Year for 2019.”

    Antonius A. Tigor has extensive knowledge in corporate, commercial, digital data compliance, cloud business, fintech, regulatory, litigation and dispute management matters gained from over a decade-long in-house legal experience in the telecom, media, communication, technology, digital data and financial technology industries. He holds a successful record for working in a matrix organisation and in advising business and function leaders. He has a solid experience in managing legal teams with diverse expertise and skills.

    In October this year, Antonius won the “In-House Lawyer of the Year” award at the ALB Indonesia Law Awards 2019 and was one of the awardees for the “Top Legal Leaders Award” at the Asia Pacific Conference in Singapore. Antonius assists Chambers and Partners (London) as a referee. He identifies and ranks the most outstanding law firms and lawyers in over 180 jurisdictions throughout the world. 

    Antonius is an Indonesia-qualified lawyer with Master of Laws from the Queen Mary University of London and was a Chevening Scholar. He is a licensed intellectual property consultant at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Republic of Indonesia, a regular speaker at domestic and international forums and a policy adviser to stakeholders.

    ELIGIBILITY 

    How do I know if I am eligible to make a submission? 

    We highly encourage all firms, individuals and in-house teams to submit, as we have numerous award categories to choose from. We welcome both past participants and newcomers to join the submission for the awards. 

    Is self-nomination permitted?

    Yes, we accept self-nominated submissions. We also accept third-party submissions, should you wish to nominate an external party or vice versa.

    Is there a fee required to make a submission in the law awards?

    No, there is no fee payment required for you or your firm/team to make a submission. 

    TIMELINE OF EVENTS

    When will the finalists and winners be announced?

    The shortlist of finalists will be released around 4-8 weeks prior to the awards ceremony. The winners will be exclusively announced at the awards ceremony on November 22, 2019 in Manila.

    NOMINATION PROCESS AND ASSESSMENT 

    How are the finalists chosen?

    Asian Legal Business will compile all of the submission entries, and the ALB editorial and research teams will extensively review each submission to ensure the criteria are met in order to advance to the shortlist of finalists. We stress that this process is fair, impartial and not subject to external influences. 

    How are the winners chosen? 

    Once the shortlist of finalists have been announced, an independent judging panel will review and select their top three choices for the award categories they are assigned to. The scores for each award category will be tabulated, and the individual/firm/team with the highest score will be announced as the winner. 

    What are the award categories that I can take part in?

    Any law firms, in-house teams or individuals may take part in multiple award categories if appropriate. The researchers reserve the right to move entries from one category to another if they feel it appropriate. The researchers’ decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into. 

    Who will be on the judging panel for ALB Phillipines Law Awards 2019? 

    There will be an independent judging panel of at least 25 senior and expert legal industry leaders to review the submission materials. The judging panel will be selected on the basis of their expertise and knowledge, and will be comprised from various sectors to correspond to the diverse list of award categories. A partial list of judges’ names will be released prior to the awarding ceremony, and the remaining judges will be revealed on the evening of the awards. 

    What will my contact information/my client’s information be used for?

    All contact information provided will not be disclosed to external parties; and will only be seen by our ALB research team and the judges panel. We keep the information on record internally, in case we need to contact you or your client regarding any questions or discrepancies in the submission form. 

    Where will my name/firm name/team name be published if we are a finalist or winner?

    As a finalist and/or winner, your firm/team/individual name will be published in ALB awards materials and print magazine. For more information, please contact us.

    Is my submission confidential?

    Any information you submit will only be reviewed by the ALB team and independent judging panel, whose names will be published. The material submitted will only be disclosed to the above; if there is any information that is strictly confidential, please mark clearly on the nomination form. Though we do our best to maintain the security of the information you provide, any information you transmit to us is done at your own risk and Thomson Reuters is not responsible for any unauthorized transmission of information.
