These include India’s Trilegal and Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co; Japan’s Nishimura & Asahi, Mori Hamada & Matsumoto, and Anderson Mori & Tomotsune, which have shown a serious appetite for growth both regionally and globally; Singapore’s Rajah & Tann, which boasts an enviable ASEAN-wide presence; and Korean firms Yulchon, Shin & Kim & Lee & Ko. In fact, Japanese firms started to spread their wings even further this year, with some marquee outfits looking to go toe-to-toe on the global stage with some of the biggest international names. In early September, Nishimura became the second Japanese Big Four law firm – after Anderson Mori – to allow foreign lawyers to become full equity partners, with the firm registering as a foreign law joint enterprise, the same structure under which international law firms operate in Japan. They also grew geographically. Nishimura itself added alliances in Malaysia and the Philippines this year, to go with a new office in Sapporo. Anderson Mori opened its second office in Europe (Brussels) and its second office in Vietnam (Hanoi). Nagashima Ohno entered into an alliance in Indonesia, Mori Hamada also opened in Sapporo, TMI Associates launched a Paris branch, and Miura & Partners announced new offices in London, San Francisco, and Jakarta.
