Ashurst has relocated derivatives specialist partner Chris Whiteley from London to Hong Kong – a move that follows hot on the heels of recent hire Gareth Hughes – an experienced litigation partner specializing in financial services disputes and contentious financial regulatory matters.

Whiteley who has been a partner in Ashurst’s London office since 2006, has particular expertise in OTC derivatives, advising on both traditional hedging and trading activities and complex transactions involving credit support arrangements and other credit mitigants.

"Derivatives is an area that offers significant opportunities for us in Asia,” Whiteley said. “Relatively few law firms in Hong Kong currently offer dedicated derivatives expertise, despite the fact that it is a major part of investment banking activity.  Since derivatives are an important part of many finance transactions, the ability to provide specialist advice is also key to providing banks with a comprehensive service."

According to Ashurst head of Asia, Geoffrey Green, Whiteley will play a key role in replicating the success of the London team in the derivatives market in Hong Kong. “Chris knows the Hong Kong market well, having previously spent a number of years here, and we are delighted to welcome him back," said Green.ALB
