Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A. Shroff & Co has opened its seventh office, and its third in South India, by establishing a presence in the city of Chennai.

The Chennai office, which will specialise in mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, capital market, private equity and private clients, and real estate and corporate work, will be headed by partner Dorothy Thomas.

Chennai, capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is home to 24 Indian companies having a net worth of more than $1 billion. It has a diversified economic base anchored by the automobile, software services, hardware manufacturing, healthcare and financial services industries. According to the Confederation of Indian Industry, the city is estimated to grow to a $100 billion economy - 2.5 times its present size - by the year 2025.

“There are plenty of opportunities in Chennai. We intend to offer the above services as there’s a vacuum in these areas. People in Chennai have to outsource lawyers for M&A, and there’s absolutely no expertise in capital market,” said Thomas, who joined the firm in 2012, in an interview with local media.

Amarchand’s other offices are located in Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Bangalore.
