Linklaters has made a rare partner hire in Hong Kong with the appointment of Andrew Chung as a disputes partner from U.S. investment bank Goldman Sachs, where he is a managing director. He will join the Magic Circle firm in August.

At Goldman Sachs, Chung is responsible for disputes and regulatory matters across Asia Pacific. “With 18 years of experience, Andrew is very well-known throughout the Hong Kong market as a commercially talented and deeply knowledgeable practitioner in Asian disputes and regulatory matters,” said Michael Bennett, Linklaters’ global head of dispute resolution, in a statement.

With the addition of Chung, the firm will have 11 disputes lawyers in Hong Kong, three of whom are partners. According to ALB’s Top 50 largest law firm ranking last year, Linklaters is the largest international firm in Hong Kong, with 191 lawyers, including 27 partners, rising from No. 4 from the year before.

But recently, Linklaters and other Magic Circle firms have slowed down on their partner hires in the Asian financial hub. Before Chung’s appointment, none made partner hires in the first quarter of the year, while other firms have been appointing partners from Magic Circle firms. For example, Ashurst snapped up a Slaughter and May counsel as a corporate partner in March and Kirkland & Ellis hired a Clifford Chance consultant as a white collar partner in February.
